Learning English Through Real- Life Experiences

As a teacher, I have always known English to be an important part of both my personal and professional life. But it wasn’t until I consciously began observing it in my surrounding that I realized how deeply it shapes our daily interactions. From Street signs to English songs, and even the online conversations I have with my students and colleagues, English is present everywhere.

In the beginning, even as a learner myself, I found it difficult to relate the lessons in the classes to real life. Knowledge of the grammar rules and vocabulary was boring to memorize and I tended to forget whenever I had to talk. This helped me understand the same challenges my students face today. So as a learner, I decided to try something practical. I kept a small notebook and wrote down English phrases I encountered in my daily life, the meaning of the phrases as well as the way how people naturally used them.

And this little course of action was my own language diary. As an example, I overheard the sentence "could you please help me? ’’ When I was at a local market during my shopping. Both the tourists and vendors used it confidently and politely. I practised saying it out loud and later I tried using it naturally with friends during school group discussions. These small moments built my confidence and I realised how powerful real life exposure is for language learning.

These experiences taught me an important lesson: English learning is not just about grammar - it is a doorway to understand people, places and cultures. The exposure to English movies, going through of online blogs and listening to English podcasts helped me broaden my worldview while strengthening my teaching strategies.

This journey reminded me of something valuable that I now share with mystudents: Language learning becomes meaningful when it is connected to life-through interaction, observation and enjoyment. Today I encourage my students to do the same in their own learning journeys.

🗳️Reader Task:

Think about one English phrase you heard in real life. Write it in the comments along with where you heard it (school, shop, online, bus, etc.).

📝Behind-the-Scenes Reflections

I  wrote this article by reflecting on the moments when English unexpectedly appeared in my everyday life. I thought about the small notebook I used to carry and the phrases I collected from markets, travel experiences and online activities. I also revisited memories of how English media influenced my learning. These real life experiences helped me shape the article in to a personal reflection about learning English naturally.

  1. My school English teacher gave positive feedback to each of us
" Excellent, You did a great job. But you have to improve more."
Because of her simple language and fluent communication, I attracted to learn English and practiced her way of speaking with my friends too. So I was automatically able to improve my English .

  2. I was a somewhat mischievous but sort of a studious student during my school days. Even though I wasn't from a fluently English speaking background I had the urge to speak English but was reluctant to be mocked or highlighted. One day our English teacher gave us a green light publishing an English speaking week. She rather used the phrase " Children I'm all ears, just feel free to ask anything". That was the first time I heard the phrase and learnt too. The onward I started speaking English fearlessly not only with the teacher but with my colleagues too .
